Select by Load Rating

Calculate the design horsepower using the ANSI selection tables, factor in a service factor (1.0–1.5 for uniform loads; up to 2.0 for heavy shock), then choose the smallest chain pitch that meets the required capacity. A smaller pitch sprocket at higher RPM is often quieter and lighter than a larger pitch at lower speed.

🔨 Base Material

AISI/SAE 1045 medium-carbon steel (0.43–0.50% C, 0.60–0.90% Mn). This grade provides a tensile strength of approximately 85 ksi and a hardness of 170–210 HB in the as-rolled condition, ensuring excellent machinability and weldability.

🔥 Heat Treatment

Teeth on sprockets with 25 teeth or fewer are induction-hardened to HRC 50–60 at the tooth tip and flank, while the hub/plate body remains at core hardness (HRC 20–28) for impact toughness. Larger tooth counts are supplied in the as-rolled condition, suitable for moderate-speed applications.

⚖ Surface Treatment

Standard black oxide (gun-blue) finish provides temporary corrosion protection during storage and shipping. Optional finishes include zinc plating (clear or yellow chromate), Dacromet coating for extreme corrosion environments, and nickel plating for food-grade applications.
