How Sprockets Work in Balers

▸ Feeder / pre-compression: In large square balers, a feeder mechanism uses a heavy chain drive (ANSI 80–100 duplex) to pre-compress the crop before the plunger. The sprocket endures the highest shock loads in the entire machine.

▸ Plunger drive (square balers): A crank-and-chain mechanism reciprocates the plunger at 40–60 strokes per minute. The drive sprocket must handle enormous cyclical tension peaks as the plunger compacts the crop.

▸ Bale chamber / belt drive (round balers): Sprockets drive the belts or chains that rotate the forming bale. Tension increases progressively as the bale grows, reaching peak load just before wrapping.

▸ Knotter / tying mechanism: Precision sprockets time the knotting cycle. Even slight tooth wear causes mistiming, resulting in broken twine and loose bales.
